One person was today detained after Rs 7.50 crore in were recovered from his possession during a routine checking drive at Daliganj crossing here, police said.

He was later handed over to authorities for further questioning, a senior police official said.



Superintendent of Police (Trans-Gomti) Durgesh Kumar said that during a routine checking drive at the Daliganj railway crossing, policemen stopped a vehicle and recovered currency notes, in Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denominations, worth Rs 7.50 crore.

The person who was carrying the currency notes was identified as Shiv Shankar Tiwari.

"Tiwari said the money he was carrying was that of his farm. He was taking the money from to Haldwani. He, however, could not furnish any document," Kumar said.

The SP said that Tiwari has not been arrested but handed over to officials for further questioning.
