A survey participated in by 30,000 respondents reveals that 75 per cent of them believe their municipal corporation is not engaged in the Swachh Mission.

As Swachh reaches the half-way mark, a humongous amount of money has been spent on its various initiatives in urban and rural India but the situation on ground on cleanliness and waste management front is still not seeing the corresponding improvement.

Only 16 per cent said that their municipal corporation was engaged in the mission while the remaining 9 per cent were unsure, a survey conducted by citizens engagement platform LocalCircles has revealed.

When asked especially if children and youth around them were living with the Swachh principles, a majority of 58 per cent people said no, while 34 per cent said yes. Eight per cent did not have an opinion.

In a similar survey conducted in October 2016, 72 per cent citizens had said that their municipality was not engaged in the mission.

"This indicates little or no effort from the municipality to engage in the Swachh Mission and with citizens," LocalCircles said in a statement released on Thursday.

When asked about improvement in access and availability of public toilets since the launch of Swachh Bharat, citizens have shown deep concern about the availability of public toilets.

Around 87 per cent citizens said that they would be happy to participate in making their neighbourhood cleaner if the central government or local municipal bodies engaged with them.
