The Perth night sky has turned it on for International Astronomy Day, with local stargazers treated to a spectacular overnight show.
In celebration of the day local amateur astronomers gathered in the Perth Hills to view the planet Venus, which was coincidentally set to reach its brightest point for the year overnight.

The show didn't stop there - the Perth Observatory said punters were also treated to a rare Iridium flare at around 6.19pm.
An Iridium flare is a phenomenon when the antennas of an Iridium communication satellite reflect sunlight directly onto the surface of the Earth, and closely resemble a shooting star.
Local Perth photographer Stanley Chmelař also managed to capture a genuine shooting star when shooting a series of stunning shots in the Swan Valley on Saturday evening.
