D G Vanzara, former supercop from Gujarat, on Monday held a road show with his supporters in Ahmedabad and made public his intent of playing a role in state politics.
Incidentally, Vanzara’s road show comes on the 10th anniversary of his arrest on charges of extra-judicial killings of Ishrat Jehan, her associates and Soharabuddin Sheikh on April 24, 2007. Vanzara was head of Gujarat Anti-terrorist Squad (ATS) and remained in judicial custody till February 18, 2007. The 1987 batch Gujarat cadre IPS had received a hero’s welcome when he returned home after his release from jail in Mumbai.
Vanzara on Monday began his rally by performing an aarti at the ancient Jagannath temple in Ahmedabad and moved around the city in an open jeep followed by hundreds of his followers waving saffron flags in cars and two-wheelers. The songs with nationalistic fervor played on as his followers shouted ‘Vande Maataram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’.
Vanzara was also felicitated by Nagarik Sanmman Samiti by weighing him with Rs 10 coins worth Rs 1.11 lakh.
