The Karnataka government on Monday received appreciation from the Supreme Court over its road map to fill up about 24,000 vacancies in the Police department.
A bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud also allowed the Uttar Pradesh government to fill over 1.5 lakh police vacancies in the state in fours years, saying it would help in dealing with the law and order problem.
Karnataka's Additional Director General of Police (Recruitment) Raghvendra H Auradkar, along with state standing counsel V N Raghupathy, submitted that the state was going to fill 725 posts of the sub-inspectors and about 8,400 posts of constables by July this year. They also submitted that by 2018-19 the government would fill 942 posts of the sub-inspectors and 12,139 posts of constables.
“You have done a good job,” the bench said, appreciating the state government's road map for filling up vacancies. The court also said the ADGP would be responsible for filling up vacancies.
The court was examining responses of different state governments on a PIL filed by Manish Kumar on about 5.42 lakh vacant posts in the police department affecting law and order situation.
The court also asked the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to fill up about 45,000 such vacancies in a time- bound manner. However, it expressed dissatisfaction with the responses of West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand and directed the top officers from the states to remain present on next Monday with their road map.
