The Haryana Government has requested the Centre to set up a National Design Studio (NDS) in Karnal district.
In a demi-official letter to Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has requested her personal intervention in setting up the studio.
Khattar has stated that the state government would provide its full support for setting up of this studio.
"The NDS would provide critical support to industry in the area of design and make Indian industries more competitive in terms of design, cost, quality and delivery time in the global market.
"Leaders of Indian leather and non-leather products industry in the state have often highlighted the need to establish NDS to promote research in designing footwear and other leather goods and accessories," he wrote.
Khattar further mentioned that NDS at Karnal having supporting infrastructure and facilities for various research and development activities in design and forecasting arena would "not only cater to the needs of our footwear units but also for the entire industry in the north Indian states".
Opening of the institute would also help in improving the quality and impression of Indian products abroad, he wrote, according to an official release.
NDS would promote research on the processes of designing with focus on footwear and leather goods and accessories that would help the industry understand the importance of design intervention, it said.
