A 20-year-old female elephant died due to suspected dehydration, in Sirumugai forest range in the district, forest department officials said today.
The carcass was found early today by the villagers, who informed the police and forest officials.
Officials suspect dehydration and starvation to be the cause for the death of the animal, as almost all water bodies in the forest region have dried up.
A postmortem will be carried out to ascertain the reason for the death, they said.
