: Puducherry government today urged the Railway Ministry to introduce MainlineElectric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service between the union territory and Villupuram to augment rail services for commuters.
Transport Commissioner S D Sundaresan said in a release that the government was interested in improving rail coverage and so requested the Ministry to concede the request for a MEMU service between Puducherry (a railway terminal of the Tiruchirapalli Railway division) and Villupuram.
He said government has also requested the Ministry to form a new railway line between Puducherry and Cuddalore on a priority basis and as part of Chennai (Perungudi)-Cuddalore railway line.
He also said that a case had also been made out by the administration to extend Tindivanam-Nageri railway line up to Puducherry and to re-introduce Broad Gauge railway service between Karaikal and Peralam.
The Transport department has provided a website (www. transport.Puducherry.Gov.In) to enable commuters get details of daily train services to and from Puducherry.
