PM Narendra Modi cautions BJP cadres against ‘Congress way of life’

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cautioned his party cadres against adopting Congress ways, now that they are in power at the Centre and in several states. At the BJP national executive meeting in Bhubaneswar, Modi categorically told party leaders that after sacrificing a lot of things, including family and comforts of life, to help the party come to power, they should not make the mistakes that Congress made over the years.

“Our party should not become like the Congress by adopting their practices when in power. We should not start loving very things that we sacrificed to come to power,” a senior BJP leader present at the conclave said, quoting Modi. The prime minister had delivered the concluding address at the two day meeting.

Party leaders maintained Modi spoke “like an RSS pracharak” about idealism and even gave some examples. “The prime minister said many BJP leaders have left their families, or stayed single and dedicated themselves to the cause of the party. In many cases, for a party leader duty came before family. If your wife is unwell and you have to take her to the doctor but your party needs you, you do the latter,” the BJP leader said. Modi also underlined the need to be honest and not indulge in corrupt practices once in power. BJP has often attacked Congress on the issue of corruption. “Do not try to work for personal profits,” he said.

The PM also asked the party leaders not to speak out of turn to the media. “There is no yantra (instrument) that can waver you from your path. But the media has one (a camera) that makes many unable to resist giving a byte,” a BJP leader said, quoting Modi.

Several Congress leaders have joined BJP in recent months. These include former foreign minister SM Krishna, Rita Joshi, Vijay Bahuguna, Harak Singh Rawat and Satpal Maharaj. On Tuesday, Arvinder Singh Lovely also joined BJP in Delhi.
