US NSA HR McMaster asks Pakistan to fight terror without bias

NEW DELHI: McMaster says Pak should seek interest in any country via political channels & not through violence

US NSA HR McMaster during his maiden visit to the South Asian region in his current role had tough words for Pakistan-sponsored terror before he landed in Islamabad in what would be the shot in arm for India.

McMaster during his visit to Kabul on Sunday to assess the future role for America in the war-torn nation and current situation in Afghanistan minced no words when he said, “Pakistan should seek its interests in Afghanistan or any other country through political channels and not through violence.“

The USA NSA advised Pakistan not to adopt selective approach in targeting terrorists echoing similar senti ments as that of India. McMaster, further in a blunt message to Taliban, advocated that the terror group must be targeted if they do not join the peace process.

The issues of Afghan stability and Pak-sponsored cross-border terror besides Indo-US defence ti es, including proposed joint production ventures will figure prominently when McMaster meets NSA AK Doval here.Earlier on Monday during his meeting with Pakistani leadership at Islamabad, the American NSA delivered a tough message asking the hosts to act against Haqqani network to avoid any strong counter-terror action by Washington.

McMaster in an interview to Afghan media house Tolo news said Pakistan should seek its interests in Afghanistan or any other country through political channels and not throughviolence.“We have hoped that Pakistani leaders will understand that it is in their interest to go after these groups less selectively than they have in the past and the best way to pursue their interest in Afghanistan and elsewhere is through diplomacy not through the use of proxies that engage in violence.“ In a warning to the Taliban, the US NSA said those who refuse to join peace process will be defeated on the battlegrounds.

ET VIEW: Seize The Opportunity
India should seize the opportunity to underscore the point that it will not longer accept Pakistan paying lip service to fighting terror. Given the stance taken by the senior Trump administration official, New Delhi needs to expose Islamabad's double talk and convey to Washington that the tough talk by the National Security Advisor to the US President must be followed by real action.

In tandem, New Delhi must reiterate its position that it will not accept mediation or interference to resolve bilateral issues with Islamabad.
