Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui meets Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui called on Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday.

Seeking cooperation from the Chinese Ambassador in sending a delegation from the state to study the successful management of Huang Ho River, Chief Minister Sonowal said that managing Brahmaputra River is a big concern for the state and the state would be benefited by learning from the China as to how it has turned into the river into a resource from a problem.

Responding to the Chinese Ambassador’s request to re-open the Stilwell Road and thereby re-establish historical trade links with China, Sonowal said that the Central Government have taken keen interest developing the Northeast region as major trade hub of South East Asia under the Act East Policy and opening of roads with the neighbouring countries is high on the Centre’s agenda.

Chinese Ambassador urged the Chief Minister to consider setting up ties with the Kunming and Yunan province as both these provinces are in geographical proximity to the state and he extended invitation to the Chief Minister to the Trade Summit to be held in Kunming in June this year.

Sonowal informed the Chinese ambassador that the state government is going to organise a Global Business Summit in November this year and he urged the Ambassador to facilitate participation of Chinese companies in the Summit in a big way.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has demanded the Central government to have an water sharing agreement on river brahmaputra.

Gogoi also raised the issue with the Chinese Ambassador. There are reports that China is constructing massive dams in upper reaches of Brahmaputra river and it is a matter of concern for India.

Gogoi, "I have taken up the issue with the Chinese Ambassador. He said that there is no reason for apprehensions for Assam about the water flow.”

Gogoi said, "I am also going to write to the Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs in this regard. There should be a water sharing agreement between the two countries which will ensure that there is no impact on flow of water,” said Gogoi.

The former Assam Chief Minister further said that he had also taken up the issue of Indian insurgent taking shelter in China with the Ambassador.

According to Gogoi, Chinese Ambassador refuted the reports and said that China had not been giving shelter to any Indian insurgent outfits.
