UK-based start-up Skipping Rocks Lab develops edible packaging for water

Lab, an innovative sustainable start-up based in London, has developed edible for water, The spherical flexible packaging, which will revolutionise the water-on-the-go market, can also be used for other liquids such as soft drinks, spirits and cosmetics, and is claimed to be cheaper than plastic.

Lab is pioneering the use of natural materials extracted from plants and seaweed, to create with low environmental impact.

With an objective to become the leading global producer of seaweed-based packaging, the company aims to create a waste-free alternatives to plastic packages. “Our impact to stop 1 billion plastic bottles reaching the ocean every year & to stop 300 million kg of CO2 from ever being emitted,” said the company in a press statement. 

Lab is part of the Climate KIC start-up acceleration program founded by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) and the scientific team is based in Imperial College.

“The consumption of non-renewable resources for single-use bottles and the amount of waste generated is profoundly unsustainable. The aim of is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact,” stated the company. 

At the moment is mostly being sold at events, while is working on setting up fully-automated production machine for the product.
