Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills district suffered extensive damage to dwelling houses, plantations, roads and government installations due to heavy rainfall and strong winds last evening, officials said.
At least seven village clusters under Zikzak and Betasing community and rural development blocks have reported such damages, Deputy Commissioner C V Diengdoh said today.
According to preliminary reports, the affected areas were Salmanpara, Anangpara, Purakhasia, Hulukona and Chapahati under Zikzak block and Ampati, Monabari and Chiringpara under Betasing Block, Diengdoh said.
Trees were uprooted and power supply was cut off in the affected areas following the storm, he said.
District and block level officials were already on the ground assessing the extent of damages in their respective areas, he said.
Meanwhile, other parts of the state were also witnessing intermittent showers and strong winds.
