PM Narendra Modi calls for big leap on road to development

BHUBANESWAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on central ministers and the Bharatiya Janata Party national executive to take a big leap forward in delivering on the promises of the government and party as the pace of achievements in the last three years needed to pick up although his administration had performed better than previous regimes.

Delivering the concluding speech at the two-day BJP national executive meeting in the Odisha capital, Modi expressed concern over “social evils” such as triple talaq and underlined the need for ensuring social justice to Muslim women through due process and not by interfering in the affairs of the community.

Modi took jibes at his detractors, stating that such groups were “factories” that raked up unsubstantiated charges which quickly fizzled out. He listed the church attacks in Delhi a few years ago, the award wapsi controversy and the ongoing controversy over alleged tampering of electronic voting machines in this regard.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari told reporters that Modi concluded his speech by stating that there is a need to take a “long jump” now after being in power for three years. He said though the pace at which the government was seeking to meet development goals was better than past dispensations, working in “mission mode” is required to meet the 2020-22 deadline set by him. 2022 will mark 75 years of India’s independence.

JAN DHAN, VAN DHAN, JAL DHAN
“Satta parivartan (change of government by defeating others in polls) is not the end but the means to an end, which is ensuring antyodaya or welfare of the weakest… There should not be arrogance after victory but we should accept the results with humility,” Gadkari said, quoting Modi. This was the first BJP national executive meeting after the party’s impressive showing in the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand assembly polls and the formation of governments in Goa and Manipur.

The Prime Minister said Jan Dhan (economic policies aimed at the poor), Van Dhan (harnessing natural resources) and Jal Dhan (irrigation) are the three prongs by which the poor, farmers and the socially and educationally backward can be emancipated.

INVOKING GANDHI
Modi also invoked Mahatma Gandhi in his speech, saying he had given the call for freedom in his speeches between 1922 and 1942. Now the call is for Mission 2022. The issue of triple talaq got a mention for the first time in a BJP national executive meeting in recent times. Modi said social justice should be ensured to Muslim women and though there is no intent to create a rift within the community, such practices needed to be ended.

“If there are social evils the society should be woken up and efforts made to provide justice… There should be no exploitation of Muslim women,” Modi was cited as having said while talking about triple talaq, according to a senior party leader.

P2G2
Modi also spoke of the concept of “P2G2” for development of society and the removal of social and economic discrimination. “P2 stands for pro-people and pro-active” and “G2 stands for good governance,” Gadkari said. The prime minister also hailed the passage of the goods and services tax legislation, the opening of 28 crore Jan Dhan accounts, and the increase in revenue receipts from Rs 13 lakh crore to Rs 20 lakh crore in the three years that the ruling coalition has been in power. He asked the party and the ministers to work with renewed dedication to achieve targets.
