New Delhi: The BJP has won three of the 10 seats in eight states that had witnessed by-elections recently.

The BJP's Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Thursday won the Delhi assembly by-election from the Rajouri Garden constituency.

He defeated his nearest rival Meenakshi Chandela of the Congress by a margin of nearly 14000 votes, pushing the ruling AAP's candidate to a distant third, according to the Election Commission.

Sirsa won 40602 votes, Chandela 25950 and the AAP's Harjeet Singh 10243 from the 78091 votes cast on Sunday, the Election Commission said after the final round of counting.

The BJP also bagged the Bhoraj assembly constituency by-poll in Himachal Pradesh, its candidate Anil Dhiman defeating the Congress' Parmila Devi by a margin of over 8000 votes, according to the Election Commission.

The commission said on its website that Dhiman polled 24434 votes out of a total 46848 polled on Sunday. Devi got 16144 votes.

In Assam's Dhemaji constituency, BJP's Ranoj Pegu beat his nearest rival Babul Sonowal of the Congress by over 9000 votes to win the by-poll.

Indications are that the the BJP is set to win three more seats - Dholpur in Rajasthan which went to Mayawati's BSP in the previous election and Ater in Madhya Pradesh which was with the Congress, and also retain Bandhavgarh again in Madhya Pradesh.

In Karnataka, meanwhile, the ruling Congress party is leading over the BJP in the both the seats -  Nanjangud (SC) and Gundlupet - where by-elections were held.

"Congress candidate KN Keshavamurthy was leading by 17416 votes over BJP's Srinivasa Prasad in the Nanjungud (SC) constituency after 11 rounds of counting till 11.30 am," said an official of the Election Commission.

In the adjacent Gundlupet constituency, MC Mohan Kumari alias Geetha of the Congress was ahead by 4650 votes of the BJP's CS Niranjankumar after nine rounds of counting.

The by-elections in the two assembly constituencies in the old Mysuru region were held on April 9. A record 78% turnout was registered in Nanjangud and an about 80% turnout was registered in Gundlupet.
