Normal life was affected in Tamil Nadu as most parts of the state reeled under severe heatwave conditions on Wednesday with the day temperature touching 40 degrees Celsius in several districts.

Met officials told DH that Trichy recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, the highest of the season. Similarly, the temperature in Madurai,Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Thiruvallur and Vellore also touched the 40 degrees mark, which forced most of the people to remain indoors.

Chennai recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. As most of the tree cover area in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram have vanished due to cyclone Vardah,Met officials also expressed concern that it would impact more during the peak summer.

A senior Met official said that heatwave and humid conditions prevailed from the early hours of the day until evening. The official said in the coming days the maximum temperature across Tamil Nadu will be above normal by two to three degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the MeT department has predicted heatwave conditions in Telangana and Rayalaseema, where the temperature is predicted to rise further in the coming two days.

The maximum temperatures will be above 40 degrees Celsius at a few places in Telangana and Rayalaseema for another three days, the weather office said in its bulletin.

The temperature in Hyderabad hovered around 40-41 degrees Celsius. The temperature is expected to remain at 41 degrees Celsius for the next two days.

The temperature is expected to reach a record 44-45 degrees Celsius in the temple town Bhadrachalam on Thursday. However, the Met department has predicted light to moderate rain and thundershowers at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next 24 hours.
