PM Narendra Modi assures Assam CM Sonowal of sealing Indo-Bangladesh border on war footing

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal that he will instruct the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to take the matter of sealing the Indo-Bangladesh border on a war footing.

Sonowal met Modi in New Delhi. Sonowal while appreciating the slew of steps initiated by the Central Government for the development of Assam and the North East, requested the Prime Minister for taking steps for the complete sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border expeditiously to stop influx once and for all.

According to the state government's statement, "Prime Minister pointed out that sealing of the international border is one of the top priorities of the Central Government and that he would instruct the MHA to take up the matter on a war footing."

The complete sealing of the border is one of the promises made by the BJP government in Assam. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh during a recent visit to Assam said, "We are committed to sealing the 223.7-km Indo-Bangladesh border and the process is on. It is expected to be completed within the next year and a half. We are setting up fencing and installing technological solutions such as sensors along the border."

Sonowal extended invitation to the Prime Minister to attend the inauguration of the Dhola- Sadiya Bridge in May and the Global Investors' Summit in November this year.

The 9.15 km long Dhola-Sadiya bridge over River Brahmaputra will bring transformation in the surface communication network.

On the two-day global investors summit titled 'Advantage Assam: Gateway to ASEAN' beginning November 9 in Guwahati, Sonowal while extending invitation to the Prime Minister to inaugurate the same, apprised him that the first-ever global investors summit followed by the Pravasi Asomiya Divas on November 11.

Sonowal also apprised the Prime Minister about the steps initiated by the State Government to attract industrial investment in the State. "A number of official procedures have been simplified to attract investments that include the enactment of Ease of Doing Business Bill. Following these measures Assam has received investments of around Rs 6,000 crore up to March 2017.”
