While being home to over 50 tribes, each of these rural communities of Maharashtra has certain distinct characteristics in language, dress and cultural mores. They present an astounding array of tattoos, hairstyles, embroidery, and costume. Visiting the tribal regions is a step back in time and a true off-the-beaten-path experience. Despite the onslaught of urbanisation, the tribal communities of Bhils, Gonds, Mahadeo Kolis, Pawras, Thakurs and Warlis continue to hold on to their unique identities.

Kelichapada is the typical tribal village located at a distance of 5 km from Jawhar town in Thane and about 135km from Mumbai. It is another undisturbed place gifted with valleys, thick forests and pleasant. The place is an abode of Warli, Kukana, and Kolcha tribes. All this together makes the place an ultimate destination for a relaxing weekend. Jawhar also has the ruins of an old wooden palace and the new palace as well, besides it offers the spectacular view of Dhabosa falls. A visitor can marvel at the indigenous Warli artwork or match to the steps of Tarpa dance.

Similarly, Dehna, which is situated 130km from Mumbai, charms with its rustic ways right at the foothills of the Sahyadri Hills. From exploring rural architecture to the real distressed wood furniture, from joining in a local game of cricket on open fields to chopping wood for preparing lunch, the place extends a no frills authentic experience.

The trip to Purushwadi village in the Akole block of Ahmednagar district off Igatpuri (30 km from Bhandardhara) remains sheer bliss amidst nature and among simple villagers. It is home to the Mahadeo Koli tribe, which lives in harmony with nature earning a living through farming. The village has just over 100 houses, and over half of them welcome guests. So, you'll be able to stay with the tribal families and experience what it's like to live in a tribal village. The Mahadeo Kolis are extremely warm and friendly, and will happily continue their regular activities unmindful of visitors or one can join in and help them, too.
