NDA leaders including Uddhav Thackeray laud Narendra Modi's leadership

NEW DELHI: Leaders of 32 NDA parties raised issues concerning their states and vote-base with PM Modi, even while praising his leadership at a dinner meeting on Monday evening.

The meeting lasted four hours as the leaders, apart from the PM and BJP chief Amit Shah, addressed it. By the time the leaders, including from the south and northeast, had dinner it was 11:45 pm. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said Modi was like a brother and emphasised that his party fully supported the BJP.

He even listed various programmes and schemes of the NDA government for the welfare of farmers like issuing of soil health cards and crop insurance. While doing so, he mentioned the waiver of farm loans in UP and maintained farmers in Maharashtra were hopeful the same will be done in the state where BJP-Sena was in power.

Earlier, in a one-on-one meeting between Thackeray and Shah, the latter is learnt to have requested that Sena leaders should not speak out of turn. Peoples Conference leader Sajjad Lone said he has "put his future in safe hands" by joining the Modi-led NDA. He maintained when he travelled abroad, people greet him warmly saying he is from "Modiland".

PDP leader Mirza Beg in an emotional speech said only Modi could solve the Kashmir problem. Parties from the northeast like NPP said challenges facing the region can only be solved with the help of the Centre. NPP leader Conrad Sangma predicted NDA will form the next government in Meghalaya. PD Rai of Sikkim Democratic Front thanked the PM for facilitating the visit of Dalai Lama to Arunachal.

Goa Forward Party, part of the BJP-led coalition in Goa, hailed Modi's leadership, but its leader Vijay Sardesai used the occasion to demand that local sensitivities be respected and restrictions on holding parties beyond 10 pm be removed. The ban on liquor sale on highways should also be dealt with, he said. MGP also flagged local concerns.

SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar expressed concerns about the rights of OBCs and requested Modi to ensure that the benefits of government programmes go to intended beneficiaries. Jitan Ram Manjhi, head of Hindustan Awam Morcha, said the rights of Dalits should be protected. He described Modi as a messiah of Dalits. AJSU leader Sudesh Mahato said land acquisition and rehabilitation issues should keep interest of farmers and small land holders in mind.

Most leaders spoke about the rights of the poor and how the Centre should help in alleviating their problems. Leaders from Tamil Nadu thanked Modi and his government for the decision to grant constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Castes on the lines of ST and ST Commission. Nagaland chief minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu hoped that a solution to the Naga problem will be found with Modi's help.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Lord Hanuman as the "first social worker" and asked party MPs to follow in his footsteps in solving the problems of the people. He was speaking at the BJP parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday morning. The day was also Hanuman Jayanti and the PM began by wishing the lawmakers on the occasion.
