TAL Manufacturing Solutions forms strategic partnership with Italy's RTA for BRABO robot

MUMBAI: TAL Manufacturing Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, formed a strategic partnership with Italy’s RTA Motion Control Systems to source motors and drives for its BRABO robot.

The deal could also help the Indian company’s efforts to make inroads into the European market. The small robot, with a payload of 2-10 kg and priced at Rs. 5-7 lakh, was formally launched on Tuesday. The company had spent Rs. 10 crore on the product development and it plans to deliver 500-600 robots in the fiscal year that just started.

TAL BRABO can be used in the automotive and auto components sectors, as well as in other industries like casting, light engineering, aerospace and logistics. "It can be used anywhere where people are working on unskilled, semiskilled or dull, dangerous or dirty jobs," TAL chairman RS Thakur said.

TAL is looking to partner with global companies to further develop the robot to handle specific jobs. "We are actually in talks with global welding companies to bring their expertise and turn the robot into a welding robot because there is huge demand for the kind considering the harsh job that welding is," Thakur told ET.

He refused to name the companies that TAL is talking to. The company is hoping to ready a robot that can do the welding job in this year itself. TAL has already delivered around 55 robots before the official launch, 30 of which are seeded, or provided on a trial basis.

The product last week received the CE certification, which allows its export to Europe. Apart from Europe, the company said it is getting enquiries from Korea and the home market for the product.

Parent Tata Motors, other automotive companies such as Mahindra &Mahindra and Volvo-Eicher, and ATM manufacturer Diebold are among companies that have employed the robot in their assembly lines. Manufactured in India — except for the motors and drives sourced from RTA — Thakur said the robot is 30-40 per cent cheaper than other similar products. "Maintenance costs will be lower as spare parts are Indian and Indian engineers will maintain it," he said.
