Women rights activist claim to have received life threat for her comments on beef consumption

GUWAHATI: Women in Governance-North East (WinG NE), an NGO has claimed that its member Bondita Acharya, a women rights defender from Jorhat, Assam has received threats from right wing organisation Bajrang Dal for her comment on beef consumption.

In a statement the NGO stated Acharya received threats for the views she expressed in social media.

She was criminally intimidated with threats which included death, gang rape, acid attack.

According to the NGO these is high disrespect to the rights of women and to the cultures and traditions of indigenous communities in Assam and across North East India.

"WinG NE would also like to assert that rearing and consumption of beef is just another food habit and intrinsically associated with the cultural practices of indigenous communities. The threats of Bajrang Dal to Bondita for her comments on Beef simply constitute just insensitivity to the cultures and traditions of indigenous communities in Northeast india." The NGO added.

WinG NE demanded that the Government of India should ensure the full protection of human rights defenders, especially the women human rights defenders.

" Government of India should stop all forms of imposition of religious and any other cultural practices incompatible to the practices and traditions of the communities in the region. government should not allow operation of commmunal organisations in Assam and across North East."
