Granite blocks put multi-level parking work to halt

BENGALURU: The work on the proposed multi-level underground parking facility at Freedom Park on Seshadri Road has ground to a halt for the past four months.
The project can accommodate thousands of cars and two-wheelers.

The white granite blocks that the contractors have bumped into while digging earth at the project site have literally stalled any progress in the project. The contractors say they cannot proceed unless the large granite blocks are cleared.

Hyderabad-based KMV Construction is carrying out the work worth Rs 79 crore, which was scheduled to be ready December 2017. The work has slowed considerably due to the discovery of 50,000 cubic metres of white granite.

VV Siva Reddy, deputy manager (projects), KMV Construction, said that 90% of the work has stopped because the BBMP is yet to look for ways to dispose of the granite. This requires inviting bids from parties who can buy these blocks but the process too has run into trouble as tenders invited by BBMP for four times have not elicited any response.

“We are supposed to complete the work by this year end but the authorities are not taking any initiative to clear the stones. The delay will only push up the cost of the project,“ Reddy said.

The multi-level parking facility, first proposed in 2008, will extend from Seshadri Road to Kalidasa Road. The facility will have three floors 12 metres below the ground.

ET reported about the problems in December last but there has been little or no headway since then.

Reddy further added that the BBMP has, in fact, asked the excavator to use as much granite as it would require. But what the company has discovered is about four times more than what the Mines and Geology scientists have estimated. The con tractors have said they don't need the stones.

Gandhinagar corporator Latha Kuvar Rathod said people want the project to gain pace. “We are now looking for a temporary place to dump the rock so that the construction can go on.“
