Narendra Modi assures Sheikh Hasina of early solution to Teesta

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hoped that there would be an early solution to the issue of sharing waters of the river Teesta with Bangladesh, while describing Dhaka’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism as an “inspiration”.

India and Bangladesh signed five defence-related MoUs, including a $500 million line of credit for defence purchases from India.

Acknowledging the presence of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee — who has been opposing the Teesta agreement — as “my honoured guest”, he said that “her feelings for Bangladesh are as warm as my own”. “I firmly believe that it is only my government and Excellency Sheikh Hasina, your government, that can and will find an early solution to Teesta water sharing,” Modi said. He also appreciated Bangladesh’s efforts to contain religious extremism.

The PM announced a $4.5 billion line of credit for implementing projects in priority sectors in Bangladesh. India and Bangladesh concluded 36 documents, including 22 pacts, MoUs and agreements in key areas like civil nuclear cooperation. Stating that energy security was an important dimension to the partnership, Modi said: “Today, we added an additional 60 MW of power to the 600 MW of power already flowing from India to Bangladesh. The supply of another 500 MW has already been committed.” The two sides have agreed to finance a diesel oil pipeline from Assam to Bangladesh .

Modi jointly launched with Sheikh Hasina train and bus services between Kolkata and Khulna in Bangladesh, and restored the once defunct Radhikapur-Biral rail link between the countries. He also expressed hope for early implementation of the Bhutan-Bangladesh-India-Nepal Motor Vehicles Agreement.

After releasing a Hindi translation of Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s autobiography, Modi said both countries would jointly produce a film on Mujibur Rahman and a documentary on the 1971 Liberation War.
