Trai will issue revised quality of service parameters: R S Sharma

NEW DELHI: Telecom sector regulator will issue revised quality of service parameters which will take into account the technologies being used for voice and data services at a granular level in order to improve the call drop situation in the country.

"We’re reviewing and relooking at the quality of service norms themselves, whether this 2 per cent global (call drop rate) is a great idea or can we make it more customer friendly," RS Sharma, chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, said on Thursday.

"The new technologies that have come, like Volte, they have different names for some parameters, so, we have to prepare an equivalence mapping so that outcomes of the parameters (can be mapped) agnostic from technologies," he said.

The changed norms may be issued as a tariff order in a couple of weeks. The review of quality of service norms is one of the three ways of improving call drops in India. Trai has recommended to the government to change the law to enable a recourse for consumers, which falls under the regulator's purview, as the second route.

The Supreme Court had struck down penalties that Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had imposed on telcos for call drops last year. The third route is to introduce more transparency on data and voice, through myspeed, analytics portal and independent and telco-based drive tests.
