Two women and a 5-year-old girl were killed after a high tension wire snapped and fell on them at Patabali village in Jajpur district, police said today.
The deceased have been identified as Pratima Manjari Behera (55), her 22-year-old daughter Pravat Nalini Behera and Pravasini Mohanta alias Tiki (5). They all were residents of Patabali village under Tamaka police station limit.
The incident occurred when Pravat Nalini along with her mother Pratima, was escorting the 5-year-old kid to her home after tuition last evening, they said adding the 11 KV high tension wire snapped and fell on the trio killing them on the spot.
When the news spread, agitated villagers blocked Duburi-Naranpur highway demanding immediate compensation to the kin of the deceased and replacement of old conductors with new ones, police said. They also gheraoed Tomka police station demanding stern action against the authorities of the power distribution company NESCO for the incident.
On being informed, Kalinga Nagar Additional Superintendent of Police Raj Kishore Dora, Dangadi Tehsildar Subash Chandra Nathsharma reached the spot and promised action against those responsible for the tragedy. The agitators withdrew the blockade after Tehasildar's assurance.
