RK Nagar bypolls: G.K. Vasan’s Tamil Maanila Congress supports Panneerselvam

Chennai: Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G.K. Vasan on Thursday extended his support to O. Panneerselvam’s AIADMK (Purathchi Thalaivi Amma) ahead of the RK Nagar bypoll.

The TMC announced last month that it will not contest the RK Nagar bypoll scheduled on 12 April.

Panneerselvam and senior leaders from his camp C. Ponnaiyan, K.P. Munusamy, Natham Viswanathan, S. Semmalai, V. Maithreyan and K. Pandiarajan met Vasan at his residence on Thursday. Later Vasan visited Panneerselvam’s residence and officially announced his party’s support for the upcoming bypoll.

Panneerselvam and Vasan would campaign together for E. Madhusudhanan on Saturday, said AIADMK (Purathchi Thalaivi Amma) party.

The bypoll was necessitated following former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s demise on 5 December.

“Panneerselvam reflects the sentiments of the people and has the support of public. And, Tamil Maanila Congress also reflects those views and have decided to extend our support,” said Vasan.

The Panneerselvam faction has fielded E. Madhusudhanan, a veteran and loyalist of AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran, while T.T.V. Dinakaran is contesting from rival AIADMK (Amma).

Opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has fielded N. Maruthu Ganesh as its candidate.

RK Nagar in Chennai will see 62 contestants—the highest since its inception in 1967.
