Punjab, Haryana order Girdawari to assess damage to crops

CHANDIGARH: Even though special girdawari has been today ordered by government in Punjab and Haryana in wake of the unexpected rains and hailstorm in some areas, experts maintain that damage is restricted to a few places.

Rains and strong winds in the last 48-hours have worried farmers who are on threshold of wheat harvesting. But the officials in the states denied reports of serious damage to overall crops in the two states. "More rains and strong winds in coming days could affect quality of wheat in some areas," a senior official of Punjab agriculture department said.

Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh today ordered special girdawari (surveyorship) to assess the damage caused to the wheat crop due to hailstorm and unseasonal rain across the state. The Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have been instructed to initiate the assessment process particularly in regions from where reports of damage to the Rabi wheat crop have been received.

The Haryana chief minister, Manohar Lal also announced that special Girdawari in the areas where the crops had not been insured under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna, would be carried out to assess the crop loss due to the recent unseasonal rains in different parts of the state.

The farmers who have insured their crops under the PMFBY would have to inform the insurance agencies through officials concerned about the loss within 48 hours. "There is little affect of the inclement weather so far and Haryana is set to produce record wheat this year," official at Haryana Agriculture department said.
