IISc on top in HRD Ministry’s university rankings

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Science emerged No. 1 in the 2017 ranking under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The second position went to Indian Institute of Technology Madras. The rankings of higher education institutes were released by the ministry of human resource development on Monday. IITs Bombay, Kharagpur and Delhi, in that order, claimed the third to fifth ranks. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, ranked 17 on the overall list, topped among management institutes. IIM Bangalore was second in this category, with an overall rank of 25.

Jawaharlal Nehru University ranked sixth overall while Banaras Hindu University also made it to the top 10 list. Among colleges, Delhi’s Miranda House bagged the top position, followed by Chennai’s Loyola College and the Capital’s Shri Ram College of Commerce. Jamia Hamdard took the lead among pharmaceutical institutes with National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali, and University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Chandigarh in the next two positions.

For this year’s ranking, the main parameters remained the same as last year. But there were a few significant changes in a few sub-parameters. Additionally, this year, every large institution was given a common overall rank as well as a disciplinespecific rank.

The parameters on which these institutes were judged included teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. According to the NIRF website, no rankings were announced this year in domains such as architecture, law and medical due to non-representative participation.
