Industry captains do not discuss law and order while they visit Assam

GUWAHATI: Law and order do not figure in the discussion of industry captains when they visit Assam these days. The industry delegation these days talks of investment.

Dr Naushad Forbes, president, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) who was in Guwahati on Monday, said, "In last seven- eight years there has been remarkable improvement in the law and order situation and naturally the Indian Inc views this development in a very positive way."

CII wants to repeat the ASEAN car rally. In 2005, Ministry of External Affairs in association with CII and member states of the ASEAN has organized first of its kind car rally under the banner of "India- ASEAN car rally" from November 22 to December 11. The rally passed through Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore.

Union Home minister, Rajnath Singh during his visit to Assam recently has stated that there has been remarkable improvement in the law and order situation in Northeast India ever since NDA government came to power in Centre in 2014.

Forbes added that the general perception about Assam is changing. Earlier there were concerns about the law and order. "There is now a huge business sentiment which was not the case seven or eight years back."

He detailed, "We are working with Assam government to channelize investments in different sector. Recently we were associated in investment summit in Jharkhand and Orissa."

According to CII, Assam is improving in the ease of doing index. However in case of Assam care needs to be exercised and a balance must be there. Forbes added, "Last seven-eight months has been really encouraging for Assam."

Niti Aayog has kick stared the process of preparing new industrial policy for Northeast India. The old policy of North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) expired on March 31, 2017.

CEO, Niti Ayog Amitabh Kant and Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Amitabh Ramesh and Joint Secretaries of Ministries of Power, Skill Development and DIPP held an interactive session with the stakeholders in Guwahati recently.

Industry bodies wants service sector to be included in the ambit of policy. The industry bodies argued that subsidies and concession given in the policy are for level playing field for geographically difficult area of Northeast India which is located far from market.

Forbes added, "New industrial policy is the commitment of the government. The new policy has to be in tune with Goods and Services Tax."
