Three militant attacks in three days in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Deteriorating security situation ahead of parliamentary by-elections in Kashmir Valley, with back-to-back militant attacks on three consecutive days in Srinagar has not only shadowed the already dampened election campaign but rattled the security grid as well.

In last three days one policeman was killed, while 20 government forces were injured, in three attacks in summer capital Srinagar.

On Monday afternoon, militants opened fire at a CRPF vehicle near Panthachowk highway on outskirts of Srinagar in which six CRPF personnel and a 10 year-old-girl was injured. Soon after the militant attack, government forces started search operation in the area and traffic on highway was blocked as well.

The Lashkar-e-Taiba has claimed responsibility for today's attack.

“Even though situation is not alarming our effort is to avoid any such incidents. Police and other security forces are trying to control the situation,” J&K police chief S P Vaid, told reporters here in Srinagar.

The Srinagar based CRPF spokesperson Bhavesh Choudhary, told reporters that this is a sensitive time ahead of elections in Valley as Hurriyat leaders have called for boycott of elections. “We are on high alert. CRPF is doing its duty. Our companies were coming Jammu to Srinagar,” said Choudhary.

Earlier on Sunday evening, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting the state, one policeman was killed, while as 11 government forces were injured, when militants threw a grenade at Nowhatta area in downtown area of Srinagar.

At least four CRPF personnel and seven policemen were injured in the attack. The injured were rushed to the SMHS hospital in Srinagar. The policeman has been identified as Shamim Ahmad from Gurez Bandipora.

“When police and CPRF were withdrawing in the evening and stone pelting started. Soon after a grenade was thrown in which four CRPF personnel and some policemen were injured,” Srinagar based CRPF spokesperson told ET.

According to local news gathering agency KNS, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen on claimed the responsibility of the grenade attack.

In a tele-statement to KNS, the operational spokesman of HM, Burhan-ud-din said, “Our militants carried out the grenade attack in which two forces personnel were killed while several got injured.”

On Saturday afternoon, militants attacked an Army convoy on Highway at Bemina on the outskirts of Srinagar, in which three army personnel were injured.

Srinagar and Anantnag parliamentary constituencies are going for polls on April 9 and 12 and opposition parties including National Conference and Congress have expressed concern over the security situation in Valley. Even as the election is just a week away, none of the parties including the ruling PDP and BJP were able to organize massive campaign rallies in any part of the Valley.
