NEW DELHI: The rupee opened unchanged at 64.92 against dollar on Friday as market participants avoided taking long positions ahead of the end of the financial year 2017.

Meanwhile domestic equity markets also opened on a flat note with negative bias tracking mixed Asian cues. The BSE Sensex opened 13.51 points, or 0.05 per cent, down at 29,633.91, while the NSE Nifty index opened 14.85 points, or 0.16 per cent, down at 9,158.90.

Angel Broking in a note said, “Considering the robust movement of domestic equity markets on Thursday amid sustained FII inflows, USDINR spot is likely to appreciate on Friday.”

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 680.06 crore on March 30 with gross purchases and gross sales of Rs 9,353.32 crore and Rs 8,673.26 crore, respectively.

On a month-to-date basis, FPIs pumped in Rs 30,884 crore in equities and Rs 25,085 crore in debt till March 30, as per data available with depository NSDL.

Government bonds ended higher on Thursday, after investors bought debt for valuation gains at fiscal year-end, while hoping the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals would further boost foreign fund inflows.

The benchmark 6.97% 2026 bond yield fell to 6.70 per cent on Thursday from 6.75 per cent in the previous session.
