Indus OS, smartphone operating system maker, raises funding

MUMBAI: The maker of regional smartphone operating system Indus OS has raised an undisclosed amount in the second tranche of its Series A round from new investors VenturEast and JSW Ventures. Existing investor Omidyar Network also participated in the round.

The Mumbai-based company plans to use the fresh capital to strengthen its workforce, develop its product range and invest in technology to cover all Indian languages. Indus OS is currently available in 12 languages and claims a user base of seven million across its smartphone brand partners, including Micromax, Intex, Karbonn, Celkon and Swipe.

"We are already in talks with international and Chinese smartphone brands for the launch of our next version, Indus OS 3.0, which we believe will revolutionise the Indian smartphone industry," said Rakesh Deshmukh, CEO, Indus OS.

The company has been working with leading hardware and developer partners in the Indian smartphone ecosystem to build Indus OS 3.0, which it plans to release in the next quarter. Deshmukh said the platform will alleviate some of the major pain points of the Indian smartphone user.

"The uniqueness of Indus OS is its India-focused operating system, it fits perfectly with our fund's primary emphasis on the rural and semi-urban markets, and the needs of the SMEs (small and medium enterprises)," said Srikanth Sundararajan, partner at VenturEast on the rationale for the investment.
