It’s too early to call Trump policies protectionist: Dick Cheney at ET GBS 2017 event

NEW DELHI: Former US vice president Dick Cheney played down the protectionist rhetoric, saying it was too early to see Donald Trump's policies in the same light.

"The question I was asked to talk about whether or not globalisation is in danger... The answer I would give is may be," he said at the ET GBS 2017 conference.

"I think it's too early to say for certain that these are protectionist measures," Cheney said, highlighting that the new US regime's policies was more about "renegotiating the trade agreements" US did in the past.

The former US vice president added that today globalisation is more about security and not what people think. He said that today America is facing a number of security threats and went on to highlight the threats that US is facing from Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and terrorist organisations like ISIS.

Cheney said that though the Cold War was over long ago but Russia under Putin has dramatically risen in the recent times.

"Not long ago, Gorbachev was in power and Soviet went out of business...But the situation has changed dramatically under Putin," he said, emphasising that the Russian government has plans for Baltics, Crimea, and Ukrain.

"He has found a way to undermine Nato...There are some serious effort made by Putin and his govt to interfere in our election which can be considered as an act of war," he added.

On China, he said that the country is very active in South China Sea and it is developing new technologies and is very active in cyber warfare.

On North Korea, Dick Cheney said that it is the "most dangerous country in the earth" and has a totally unpredictable government.

"North Koreans have successfully tested nuclear weapons, atleast 7 so far...there are evidence that it is working with Iran on missile tech," he said at the ET GBS 2017 event.

He also criticised the Obama administration for slashing defence budget which he said are "devastating for US military". The Trump admin, he said, is trying to rebuild the US military.

He went on to term the current geopolitical situations in the world as "most challenging since world war 2".
