Action should be taken by law, Shiv Sena against Virendra Gaikwad: Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress today denigrated and castigated Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad for assaulting an Air India employee, saying strict action should be taken against him as per law and by his party.

"Nobody in public life can even remotely do anything but to denigrate and castigate such behaviour. We hope and trust that the Law takes its clear unequivocal and prompt course.

"That his party takes a quick decision as we are told it is considering. It is most important that there is an inner realisation and an inner element of apology and inner of relevant reform which should set up very good example of kind of consciousness," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

He said such a thing not only hurts the person who does it or the victim, "but even hurts each one of us who proudly claim belonging and ownership of a particularly exclusive category called MPs. So think that inner realisation and response should be most effective".

Asked if any action against him be taken in Parliament for Gaikwad's unruly behaviour, Singhvi said that is something which the Speaker will go into and she has already made a statement, but there is no question of preempting that.

"It will depend first and foremost on the Speaker's preliminary view and secondly the will of that House. The Speaker has spoken at the moment. Let us wait," he said.

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge termed the incident as "condemnable" and said the MPs from any party should not behave in such a manner and be careful and polite.

"Such type of behaviour is condemnable. The civil aviation minister has condemned this act. People should not create a controversy to bring down the status and reputation of an institution. MPs should behave carefully and politely," he said.

Gaikwad had yesterday assaulted a senior Air India staffer with his slippers.

National carrier Air India along with other private airlines today banned the Shiv Sena MP from flying on their aircraft.
