Maternity bill makes startups hire men over women: Survey

The passage of the Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which seeks to increase maternity leave to 26 weeks from 12 weeks, may see many startups and small enterprises preferring to hire men over women.

According to a poll conducted by citizen engagement platform LocalCircles among more than 4,300 startup founders, SMEs and entrepreneurs, 26% said they will prefer hiring male employees and 35% predicted a negative impact from the law on their cost and profitability.

Many startups the survey covered didn't have female employees at all.
