Seven candidates were in the fray for Anantnag bypoll as the deadline for filing nominations ended today.

The main contest is expected between ruling PDP candidate Mufti Tassaduq Hussain and state chief G A Mir.



"We have received seven nomination papers during the prescribed time limit," an official said.

The bypoll was necessitated for Anantnag seat after Hussain's sister resigned from the to become the Chief Minister of last year.

Scrutiny of the nominations will be held on March 27 and the last date of withdrawal of nominations is March 29 for Anantnag seat where polling will be held April 12, the official said.

Meanwhile, a total of nine candidates remained in the fray for the constituency as no candidate withdrew papers.

Today was the last date for the withdrawal of nominations from constituency which is going to polls on April 9.

Former PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra, who had defeated NC president Farooq Abdullah in the last parliamentary elections from the seat, resigned last year necessitating the bypolls.

Karra, who recently joined Congress, is not contesting the polls following seat sharing agreement between his party and National Conference which has fielded Abdullah from the constituency and is expected to face a tough challenge from PDP's Nazir Ahmad Khan.
