PM cautions MPs against meddling in transfers

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah cautioned party MPs from Uttar Pradesh against interfering in the appointment of bureaucrats in the state. Modi suggested them to cooperate with the state government towards development.

The message to the party MPs from Uttar Pradesh was delivered personally by the top leadership during a breakfast meeting called by the PM at his residence on Thursday. “One should desist from the transfer posting industry.

MPs should cooperate with the new government in its development works. The good performance will only help individual MPs,” a source quoted the PM as telling the MPs.

UP boasts of the largest bureaucracy, which has become highly politicised in the past decade and half when the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party ruled the country’s most populous state. The BJP leadership is concerned that the bureaucracy may now try to use party leaders, including its MPs, to get favourable posting in the new government.

Having come to power on the promise of better governance than previous regimes of SP and BSP, the BJP leadership doesn’t want to take chances that could hamper the government’s work. Sources said the PM will hold breakfast meetings with party MPs from other states as well soon.
