Mid-term polls likely in Maharashtra as BJP miffed with Shiv Sena

MUMBAI: The buzz about a midterm poll is getting louder all over again in Maharashtra as the Bharatiya Janata Party is finding it tough to get along with its ally, Shiv Sena.

Just before the UP elections, BJP leaders in the state were contemplating going for a midterm polls in Maharashtra if the BJP did well in the northern state. But while the BJP has indeed done very well in UP, the BJP leadership in Maharashtra had decided to patch up with the Sena.

The BJP offered an olive branch to the Sena by not contesting for the mayor’s as well as some other key posts, but in return, wanted the Sena to support the Fadnavis government.

But now, BJP leaders say Sena has not stuck to the bargain. “They are back to their old tricks, and are behaving more like an opposition than an ally. How long do we put up with this?” asked a BJP leader. The BJP is miffed because the Sena has joined the Opposition Congress-NCP in raking up the issue of farmers’ loan waivers.

In fact, when 19 Congress and NCP MLAs were suspended for unruly conduct during the budget session, some Sena ministers met CM Fadnavis and protested against the move.
