New Delhi: The Yogendra Yadav-led Swaraj India party told the Delhi high court on Wednesday that the Delhi state election commission’s decision to deny a common symbol for the party’s candidates in the municipal elections was ‘discriminatory and violates Article 14 (equality before law) of the Constitution of India’.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls will be held on 22 April.
The party had on Tuesday approached the Delhi high court challenging the Delhi state election commission’s decision.
“Swaraj India cannot say that they have been discriminated against as we have rejected similar prayers from 27 other parties for allotment of a common symbol,” said Sumeet Pushkarna, lawyer representing the Delhi state election commission.
The matter will continue to be heard on Thursday.
