ClearTax to hire 400 as it aims to support 1 billion invoices for GST

BENGALURU: ClearTax, which offers a platform for tax return e-filing, is betting big on the Goods and Services Tax and is hiring aggressively to prepare for the rollout of the GST regime expected on July 1. The company said it is expanding its team size by hiring 400 employees across product, tech, finance and marketing and is also likely to exceed its investment of $5 million for its GST offering.

Founder Archit Gupta said ClearTax is looking at an opportunity of supporting 1 billion invoices each month. “It is a big market opportunity for ClearTax, and we are building tools for enterprises, MSMEs and chartered accountants," Gupta told ET. Eight million tax-paying entities in India are expected to file returns for GST.

ClearTax will offer tax filing solutions on mobile, website and even offline as an Assistant Service Provider (ASP) . The GST Network (GSTN), the nodal agency in charge of laying down the IT infrastructure for the new tax system, has shortlisted 34 companies to serve as GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs) and get direct access to its technology infrastructure, while ASPs can also offer tax return-filing tools and services in collaboration with the GSPs.

ClearTax has hired Nitin Chaudhary, who formerly worked with Flipkart as associate director and business finance head for the lifestyle unit, to look at strategy and operations for ClearTax’s GST vertical.

Several other GSPs and ASP are also hiring aggressively to ensure their GST solutions are ready in time for the July 1 rollout.

Alankit Ltd, one of the shortlisted GSPs said the company is hiring 1400 experts across departments such as IT, marketing, POS/retail as it prepares interfaces for tax payers to interact with the GST network for their filings.

LegalRaasta, which is working as an ASP to offer GST solutions, has hired about 80 people and will hire 120 more by July.
