BJP's Nongthombam Biren Singh to be new Manipur Chief Minister

GUWAHATI: With both Congress and BJP staking claim to form the government in Manipur after the fractured mandate in assembly polls, Governor Najma Heptulla ask chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh to put papers for facilitating the process of government formation in the state.

BJP legislature party has elected N.Biren Singh as its leader. Biren in the run up to polls joined BJP abandoning congress.

Ibobi Singh has refused to resign claiming being the single largest party with 28 MLAs in the house of 60, he should be allowed to form the government. Meanwhile there are reports of six MLAs including one independent and five Congress MLAs have shifted to Assam.

Heptulla said,” BJP leaders submitted a letter with 32 supporting MLA. Ibobi Singh brought letter on behalf of National People’s Party (NPP) signed by secretary and president, I told him you can't bring letter on behalf of NPP as NPP president has met her and offered to support BJP. Similarly Naga Peoples Front (NPF) president has faxed a letter offering to support BJP.”

She said, “I was satisfied that they (BJP) have support of 32 MLAs.”

Congress has won 28 seats and to touch magic number of 31, grand old party is expecting support of one independent MLA and another TMC leader.

Meanwhile BJP which had 21 seats has support of NPP and NPF which together has eight MLAs. BJP claims to have support of one Lok Jan Shakti party MLA besides a Trinamool congress legislator. A congress MLA Shyam Kumar had gone to Rajbhavan with BJP leaders.

C.P Joshi, AICC General Secretary in charge of Northeast said, “The supreme court in its judgement has stated that in case of hung house single largest party must be invited to form the government and the trial of strength must take place in the floor of house.”

Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the convener of Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a BJP-floated platform of non-Congress parties said, “ We have around 33 MLAs and we can bring as many as many MLAs as we want however we do not need for now.
