IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano to visit India this week

NEW DELHI: Eyeing a push in the nuclear energy sector in partnership with global powers and securing uranium from abroad, India will host International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano this week.

This will be Amano's second visit to India since 2015 and part of his engagements with rising powers which are investing in peaceful use of nuclear energy in compliance with international non-proliferation norms. Persons familiar with IAEA-India ties indicated that Amano is favaourable to growth in India's nuclear energy sector. India is a founding member of IAEA.

The visit will also provide Amano an opportunity to discuss his re-election as DG of IAEA as his term comes to an end in 2017. Late last year India announced its support for Amano's candidature for the second term as the head of the global nuclear body. He became IAEA DG in 2009. Recently Amano also met senior Indian officials in Europe to discuss development in the country's nuclear sector.

While it is not pronounced India could discuss case of its membership to NSG with the IAEA chief in the backdrop of Delhi's quest for global partnership for the country's nuclear energy sector.

When Amano met the Prime Minister in 2015 here he lauded IAEA for its enormous contribution to the promotion of safe and secure use of atomic science for peace and development in the world – goals that India shared.

Modi during that meeting had attached special importance to IAEA's crucial role in generating public awareness and confidence on safety aspects; and, in supporting efforts to make nuclear power more affordable.

The Prime Minister conveyed to Amano that he considered nuclear energy to be vital for supporting economic development in India, meeting the energy needs of citizens and addressing the challenge of climate change.

On his part during the meeting Amano expressed appreciation and admiration for the India's progress in nuclear science and technology, focus on developmental aspects, commitment to the highest levels of safety and security standards, and record as a responsible nuclear power; the excellent relations between IAEA and India; India's contribution to the work of IAEA; and, India's assistance to neighbouring and other countries in the peaceful and developmental aspects of nuclear science.
