The just-concluded elections to five state assemblies have firmly established the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the national pole of Indian politics. Even though the combined vote share of the BJP has decreased slightly from what it was in 2014 in these states, its vote share is significantly higher than what it was in 2012.

While the aggregate Congress vote share in 2014 and 2017 has remained roughly the same, the gap between the vote shares of the two parties in these states still remains significant.
