Modi terms poll victory as the foundation of new India,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has termed BJP's historic win in assembly elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, as the foundation of a new India.
Accepting felicitations from party leaders and supporters at BJP headquarters, he said: "I see this victory as the foundation of a new India where 65 per cent of the population will be of young people below 35 years of age... a new India of unprecedently vigilant women.
"A new India where the poor do not want anything by way of charity, but seek opportunity to chart out their own course. I see this change happening," he told the gathering which lapped up every word he said, amid repeated chants of 'Modi! Modi! Modi!'
Modi, whose 'crematorium and graveyard' remark at an election rally in UP was seen as intended to polarise voters along communal lines, emphasised on the theme of development.
"Beyond the emotive issues, political parties fought shy of going to elections on the issue of development. Development is a difficult subject. In these elections, there was a lack of emotive issues, but the huge voter turnout after the campaign based on development shows the transition that his happening towards creation of a new India," he said.
These elections must be evaluated as people have voted heavily despite the absence of any emotional issue. The poor have voted in large numbers on the topic of development, he said.
"Today poor want opportunities not appeasements...The more the poor get chances, the faster the nation will grow. The more the poor get opportunity, the more he will work for the nation,"
He said that if the pressure on middle class, who are now the backbone of the country, will lessen with the rise of poor.
While addressing party workers in his maiden speech after the landslide victory in UP at the BJP headquarter in New Delhi, Modi also said that the huge turnout during the elections in the five states is a good sign for democracy.
"There are many reasons for a win but such empathetic win after such a record turnout is special and makes everyone think," said the PM.
Hailing Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani, Modi said that the duo worked hard and whatever BJP achieved is a result of that.
Heaping praises on Amit Shah, he said that due to the BJP president's efforts the party has now become one of the largest in the world
"BJP now has not got the opportunity to serve the maximum number of people which is a golden moment for the party. But golden moment didn't come all of a sudden. Lakhs of people worked hard and that's why we reached here," Modi said.
"Our next target is 2022 but I am not driven by electoral politics. Many CMs and PMs worked in their own way and I respect that," he went on.
"There are five more years for the 75th year of India's independence and if citizens work with determination, we can fulfill our dreams. And this huge victory of BJP in five states will bolster these dreams.
Assuring voters that his party MLAs will work hard to fulfil the promises made, Modi repeated his comments that he made in 2014.
"In the same venue in 2014, my comments were taken in the wrong context. But I am repeating those words again today. I said three things then. First that we are new and may make mistake but we will not do anything with wrong intentions."
"Secondly I said that we will work hard and thirdly I had said that we will do everything clean."
Modi, who was accused by his rivals of playing caste and religion politics during the campaign, said the BJP-led dispensation will take everybody along as "in democracy governments are formed with a majority but run with consensus".
Noting that the government has no right to discriminate against anybody, Modi said, "This government is of those who have voted for it and also those who have not. Of those who have walked along, and also of those who have not."
