The counting of votes for Assembly Elections 2017 started at 8 in the morning today, wrapping up a staggered poll process in five states - Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab, Manipur and Uttarakhand - in what is largely seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation move.

Nine Congress turncoats who joined BJP last year are leading in their respective seats. Former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna's son Saket Bahuguna was leading by 10,000 votes in Sitarganj seat. Ritu Khanduri, daughter of former CM BC Khanduri is leading by 2000 votes from Chaubattakhal seat. Sanjeev Arya, son of former minister Yashpal Arya leading from Nainital. 

Interestingly, chief minister Harish Rawat and his all 11 ministers trailing from respective seats. CM Rawat contesting from two seats.

Congress wins a seat as three times CM Okram Ibobi Singh wins from Thoubal constituency. Congress leads in other 11 seats. 

On the other hand, BJP opens it account in the north eastern Indian state as its Konthoujam constituency candidate Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh wins and leads in other 13 seats. 

Apart from the two major parties, independent candidate Nasir Ahmed Sheikh wins from Lilong constituency. LDF leads 2 seats and Others leading in 5 seats.

Celebrations in BJP

Leaders and supporters hugged each other, broke into brief jigs and raised victory slogans in the BJP office in UP as counting trends indicated a comfortable victory for the party

 "It was 14 years of 'vanvas' for us, which is now coming to an end," this is how the BJP workers referred to their victory after the party showed a lead on more than 300 seats. 

Last time the party was in power in Uttar Pradesh was in 2002, when Rajnath Singh was the Chief Minister.

Trends for all 403 seats have arrived in UP, and shows BJP ahead on more than 290 seats. SP and Congress alliance follows on more than 80 seats, while BSP remains at number 3 with showing a forward trend on about 20 seats. 

This is against all predictions of BSP displaying remarkable numbers.  

BJP office has already wore a festive environment. Workers have gathered with Lotus in their hands. All leaders have gathered to watch their probable victory.

The party state president Keshav Prasad Maurya has thanked the people of UP for showing faith in BJP, and acknowledged that it is the victory of the party workers who worked hard.

Congress leader Jitin Prasada is lagging behind from Tilhar constituency. As a Petroleum Minister in the UPA government, Prasada had been involved in several controversies and had been shifted out from the ministry. 

However, Aditi Singh, who is contesting on Congress ticket from Rae Bareli Sadar constituency, is trending ahead. Aditi is the daughter of influential leader Akhilesh Singh, who had been winning this seat unopposed as an independent candidate, in the past.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat continues to trail from Haridwar rural seat by a margin from 6,000 votes. BJP sitting MLA Swami Yatesawaranand leads here. Overall BJP leads on 44 seats while Congress on 22 seats. BJP candidate Ganesh Joshi who became infamous for hitting a horse named Shaktiman also leads from Mussoorie. 

The trends seem on the line of exit polls which predicted a clean sweep for BJP in the hill state. The BJP meanwhile will meet on today noon to discuss poll results. The party MP Ramesh Pokhriyal said the trends indicates that people have voted for a clean system.

"SP-Congress alliance will win with a huge margin. People have supported us," Yadav told reporters.

The counting, which started at 8 AM, is taking place at 54 centres in 27 locations. Early trends are likely to emerge within the first couple of hours.

The fate of 1,145 candidates, including 81 women, will be known on Saturday. A total of 77.4 per cent of the 1.98 crore electors in Punjab voted on February 4.

#UPresults: Waiting for their fate with baited breath, the politicians have started their day by worshipping their favourite deities.
 
This was true in the case of candidates of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), who have defected from other parties, such as Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who came from Congress and Brijesh Pathak who defected from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
 
Even the first-timer Swati Singh, the wife of the expelled BJP leader Daya Shankar Singh, visited a temple early morning.

According to the Election Commission directives, no mobile phones will be allowed inside the counting centres. Arrangements have also been made for video recording of counting centres.  
 
In UP, 78 counting centres have been set up, where Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) counting will take place after postal ballets.
 
Of 75 districts, 72 districts have 1 counting centre each, whereas Amethi, Azamgarh, and Kushinagar districts have 2 centres each.
 
The result trends are expected to start after at least 3 hours of counting.
