Election results 2017 live: BJP’s UP win a victory of Narendra Modi’s agendas, says Amit Shah

New Delhi: The Election Commission has started vote counting for assembly election results in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, has started amid tight security. The most riveting contest is expected in Uttar Pradesh, seen as a game-changer and a virtual referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and his reforms agenda.

In Uttar Pradesh, which has a 403-member assembly, 78 counting centres have been set up in 75 districts. Fifteen counting centres have been established in Uttarakhand where the assembly strength is 70 . Votes will be counted at 54 centres in 27 locations set up for election to 117-member Punjab Assembly. In Goa, votes will be counted at two centres in North and South Goa to declare the winners in 40 seats. In Manipur, counting of votes will be held for 60 seats.

1.23 pm: The AAP says disappointed with its performance in Punjab and Goa and will introspect on the reasons behind it.

1.18 pm: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal says he will resign on Sunday, even as he congratulated Amarinder Singh for Congress’s victory in Punjab elections. “SAD will discuss reasons for defeat in the Punjab assembly elections,” he added.

1.17 pm: Former Goa CM Digambar Kamat (Congress) wins from Margao constituency, defeating BJP candidate Sharmad Pai Raiturcar by 4,900 votes.

12.56 pm: Congress admits that “the bad loss” in Uttar Pradesh hurts, adding that the party needs to do “fundamental restructuring” in the state, calling for hard decisions.

12.54 pm: The BJP and its allies appear poised to sweep all the five assembly segments which together form PM Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency as well as the three adjoining ones falling in the district. As per trends available till noon, the BJP is leading by a comfortable margin in all the three urban seats it had won in 2012—Varanasi Cantt, Varanasi South and Varanasi North.

12.52 pm: BJP president hails the party’s win in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand as a victory of BJP’s ideology and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pro-poor and development policies.

12.32 pm: Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh thanked people of the state for their overwhelming support. “Arvind Kejriwal is like a summer storm which came and has gone,” said Singh. “We hope Union Government will recognise demands of Punjab and assist us.” Thanking Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Singh said: “The Congress legislature party will meet tomorrow.”

12.19 pm: Navjot Singh Sindhu on Congress’s performance in Punjab: “Punjab results a defeat of Akali Dal’s arrogance... This is the revival of Congress. It will take strength from this beginning in Punjab and spread.”

12.17 pm: Manipur CM Okram Ibobi Singh wins Thoubal Assembly constituency by over 8,000 votes. Sapam Ranjan Singh and Sapam Ranjan Singh of the BJP also posted wins in the state.

12.07 pm: Goa deputy chief minister Francis D’Souza has defeated his nearest rival Vinod Phadke of the MGP in Mapusa constituency.

12.03 pm: Home minister Rajnath Singh acknowledges the support of the people of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in ensuring BJP’s victory in those states.

11.53 am: Congress Kanwarpal Singh wins Anandpur Sahib seat in Punjab by defeating his nearest BJP rival Parminder Sharma by a margin of 23,881 votes. The seat was earlier held by cabinet minister Madan Mohan Mittal of the BJP.

11.35 pm: Initial trends released by the Election Commission show that the AAP is trailing in Punjab and is yet to open its tally in Goa—a setback in its attempt to widen its electoral footprint. The AAP is ahead on 23 seats in Punjab and none in Goa. (Pretika Khanna, Mint)

11.33 am: The BJP and its allies consolidated their position in Uttar Pradesh by surging ahead in 290 of the 403 seats, going by trends available from 386 constituencies.

11.20 am: Congress’s Gurjit Singh Aujla leading by 21,881 votes in Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency. Bypolls here were held with the assembly polls.

11.15 am: BJP leaders today credited “Modi wave” for the party’s strong showing in Uttar Pradesh elections. On the next chief minister in the state, they said the decision will be taken by the BJP parliamentary board and the legislature party in the state soon.

10.48 am: The BJP is set to sweep Uttar Pradesh as it’s now leading on 300 seats out of 403 assembly constituencies, indicating a rout for SP-Congress alliance and the BSP.

10.46 am: Election Commission data shows Congress leading in 63 seats in Punjab, with AAP in 22 seats and BJP-SAD combine on 28 seats.

10.40 am: Capt. Amarinder Singh of Congress is leading by 26, 000 votes in Patiala but trailing Parkash Singh Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal by 7,000 votes in Lambi.

9.37 am: In Punjab, the Congress is currently leading in 13 seats, followed by the ruling SAD-BJP on five and AAP on four seats each, as per early trends. Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal leading from Lambi seat, ahead of nearest rival Congress’s Capt. Amarinder Singh.

Congress was ahead in Amritsar Central, Tarn Taran, Khadoor Sahib, Jalandhar West (R), Chabbewal (R), Anandpur Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Dharamkot, Baluana (Reserve), Gidderbaha, Faridkot, Rajpura and Patiala seats while SAD was ahead in Lambi, Bhagapurana, Moga and Majitha seats. 8.58 am: Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal is leading in Lambi seat, according to early trends. The 89-year-old is locked in a triangular contest with Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh and journalist-turned-politician Jarnail Singh of the AAP.
