Rupee opens on flat note ahead of election results

NEW DELHI: The rupee opened on a flat note on Friday ahead of the upcoming state elections results on Saturday and concerns over an impending Fed rate hike. The currency opened 1 paise higher at 66.70 against dollar.

Meanwhile, the domestic equity market opened in the green following mixed global cues. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened 76.87 points, or 0.27 per cent, up at 29,006, while the 50-share NSE Nifty index opened 26.70 points, or 0.30 per cent, up at 8,953.70.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) stood net buyers in domestic equity markets on Thursday as they bought shares worth Rs 3,572.73 crore with gross purchases and gross sales of Rs 7,527.46 crore and Rs 3,954.73 crore, respectively.

For today’s trading session, Angel Commodities said, “USDINR spot is expected to remain sideways to up as traders avoid taking any large positions ahead of the upcoming state elections on March 11.”

Government bonds ended higher on Thursday but sentiment remained muted on caution ahead of possibilities of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week. The benchmark 6.97% 2026 bond yield remained unchanged at 6.86 per cent.
