After introducing original content into its portfolio, music streaming app Saavn is looking at regional content to expand its user base in the Indian market.

The New York-headquartered company, which had raised $100 million funding from a clutch of investors including Tiger Global Management three years ago, said it may also look for a series D funding in couple of months.

“Regional content is a major growth engine for us. Three years back, regional content accounted for a merely five per cent, of our overall content. However, it is about 15 per cent now. We will continue to invest in growing the regional market base including some original content,” Paramdeep Singh, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, Saavn LLC, told Business Line.

Singh said the company has content in 12 regional languages. Saavn is currently accessed in 196 countries and offers 30 million tracks.

Last year, Saavn has announced the launch of Saavn Original Programming, an initiative that will expand Saavn’s repertoire of content to include a collection of original, long-form audio programs for its worldwide user base. Singh said Saavn is well on track in consolidating its Original Programming Showcase and is bringing on board new artistes.

Under its original music programmes, Saavn also distributes its artists’ work beyond just its own streaming service.

Saavn has an ad-supported ‘freemium’ service and a paid pro service, through which it generates revenue. Saavn competes with other streaming services such as Hungama.com, Airtel’s Wynk, Gaana.com.

“We have over 20 million monthly active users. We expect our base to touch about 100 million in next two year backed by growth improvement in the data infrastructure,” Singh said. He did not divulge the company's revenues.

Asked if Saavn was able to attract advertisers, Singh said that it was seeing good traction.

Earlier this year, Saavn had launched programmatic audio advertising in India.

Pact with AdsWizz

The platform, created in partnership with AdsWizz, automates the real-time buying, targeting, optimisation, and reporting of audio ad inventory.

“Digital audio advertising is an untapped opportunity. Brands have an opportunity to engage with the listeners,” Singh said.

Asked if piracy was an area of concern, Singh said that Saavn is working closely with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, which has a mandate of overseeing copyrights in India, to tackle the issue.
