BJP could form next govt in UP or may finish ahead of SP

NEW DELHI: The BJP is likely to form the next government in UP or become the largest party, ahead of the SP-Congress alliance, indicated exit polls on Thursday, 36 hours before the actual results.

Times Now-VMR gave a clear majority to the BJP. It said that the BJP would win 190-210 seats. The India Today-Axis Poll gave 251-279 seats to the BJP in a House of 403, predicting just 88-112 seats for the alliance and 28-42 for BSP.

If the projections are true, it would reiterate PM Modi’s popularity in UP. The BJP had won 71 out of 80 seats in the state in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. “We will win 220-plus seats in UP,” two senior BJP functionaries told ETon Thursday.

The big chunk of 105 seats given to Congress by SP and Akhilesh Yadav’s gross miscalculation on the negative impact of demonetisation could be factors if the loss of the SP-Congress Alliance as per projections of the exit polls come true on March 11.

Every exit poll predicted that BSP would finish third with a double digit tally, predicting the biggest hit will be taken by Mayawati. But in case of a hung House, that some exit polls have predicted, her support could be crucial to who forms the next government in UP.

Speaking to BBC Hindi on the issue of such a post-poll alliance CM Akhilesh Yadav said he was confident that SP and Congress would form the next government but added that all steps would be taken to avoid President’s rule in the state in the event of a hung assembly.

“Because I call Mayawati my aunt, people assume such a thing can happen. I am sure SP-Congress will get the numbers. If we need (support) to form the government, then you see no one will wish for President rule in the state and BJP to run the state by remote,” Yadav told BBC. “By giving a hint to an alliance with BSP, Akhilesh Yadav has conceded defeat to the BJP in UP even before the votes are counted,” BJP state president Keshav Prasad Maurya said.

India Today-Axis Poll survey had a sample size of 75,000-odd respondents from all 403 assembly constituencies. 36% vote share was given to BJP. Three other polls said BJP could stop at 185, 167 or 176 seats, with 202 seats required for a clear majority.

The India Today-Axis Poll said BJP will sweep Purvanchal in Phase 6 and 7. PM Modi had camped in Varanasi for three days during the last phase of polling. The BSP’s experiment of tying up with Mukhtar Ansari in Purvanchal has flopped and Mayawati is not doing well in Bundelkhand either, the Axis poll said.
