Avalanche warning issued for hilly areas of Kashmir, Kargil

An avalanche warning was issued today for hilly and vulnerable areas of Kashmir valley and district after these places received fresh snowfall.

"Medium danger avalanche warning valid for next 24 hours from March 8 to March 9 (1700 hrs) exists for avalanche-prone slopes in Kupwara, Bandipora, Anantnag, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Budgam and districts of Kashmir Division," an official spokesman said quoting a statement issued by the Divisional Administration.



Accordingly, the spokesman said, all the Deputy Commissioners concerned have been asked to take precautionary measures in their respective districts and advise people not to venture in avalanche-prone areas during the aforementioned period and monitor the situation regularly to avert any untoward incident.

The high altitude areas of Kashmir valley and experienced snowfall since yesterday under the influence of western disturbance which is expected to remain active in the region till the weekend.
